race engine, need help
Hi,
i need to know a couple of things, if anyone here can help me, it would be appriated.
1) I have access now to a 1300 crossflow engine from a mk 2 escort. Engine plate on frame says it is a J2 engine. but i can't find anything on
the engine it self telling me what it is. where should i be looking? all i can see is 9K19, the ford logo and the engine number. ( i have no idea what
9k19 means (according to my research there isn't a k1))
2) what is the difference between a j2 engine and a j3 (which i have found out is the gt engine), i belive it might have a different cam, but is there
anything else? valves? carb? other parts? can you turn a j2 engine into a j3 (GT) engine????
thanks for any help.

Hi
I can’t help on point 1, but on point 2 I don’t know what a J2 or J3 engine is but the main differneces between the standard crossflow and the GT
crossflow is the cam and the carb, valve size may differ slightly as well.
The GT engine has a slightly ‘sportier’ cam and a twin choke weber carb with corresponding manifold. I think the exhaust manifold may differ slightly
as well. The standard engine usually has a single choke carb. Obviously you need to make sure it’s the one originally fitted to the car and hasn’t
had any mods over the last 30 years!
If you are planning to rebuild the engine you can make it into whatever you want by changing the above bits. Is it for the Locost series? If so the
regs will tell you which bits you can use, and specify the valve size.
Regards
Gavin.

As Gavin has said, the only difference between a 1300GT and a standard 1300 was the carb and the cam. Where confusion lies is in the valve sizes, most
people think all GT engines had bigger valve sizes when in fact only the 1600 did (which aren't legal in Locost Racing btw), the 1300 GT valve
sizes are exactly the same as the standard 1300.
