Getting started
Posted in the right section this time:
Hello everyone,
I'm about to get started on a book spec car with the intention of racing it in the Locost Series. I have a couple of questions to start with:
I'm going to build the chassis myself, are there things I should bear in mind for race use when constructing the chassis? I don't want to
have to disassemble the car after SVA to make huge modifications for the race series.
Is the Locost listed in the Which Kit Car Guide? I was wondering about competing in other race series' the SMRC one for Caterhams and Kit Cars
requires the cars to be listed there.
Thanks,
Simon

for racing you want the stiffest chassis possible, loads of stuff on it here, youd better be ready
for a lot of reading. you can incorporate a full roll cage (dont know if you have to), im sure google or a search on here will yield some good
results.

The regulations give direction as to what you're allowed in terms of a few extra chassis members and the rollcage.

Not everyone has all the extra bits (myself included) but i've been told it's worth it in terms of increased torsional stiffness,
particularly at the front where you don't have the reinforcement of the cage helping you out.

Thanks,
I've read through the locost regs, many times now. It looks like some things have changed, roll cages have to be fitted by a roll cage
manufacturer now and I could've sworn you used to be able to have an aluminium floor instead of steel - but I could be wrong.
It looks like other than the book chassis there are only the 3 extra pieces mentioned in the regs. Seems odd tha piece A (across the engine)
wasn't there in the original design but I presume it gets in the way of the engine or moving the engine in some way.
I've got my Escort mk2 1300GL bought and am picking it up this weekend. It still works, taxed and tested and everything - hopefully will make it
home under it's own steam.

Hi roll cages dont have to be manufacturer deighnd or fitted but it is adviseable to get it done properly as this is what might save your life at some
point. Ali floors where never an option in locost aldo locost is the only championship that uses a steel floor. The extra diag in the engine bay was
left out by ron so that you could use the original exhaust manifold but as we use over chassis manifolds you might as well put it in as it makes a
hell of a difference the same with the extra ones for the top out side to the inside front of tunnel for extra side impact strengh .
