Fuel pump wiring...

Just putting my Fuel Pump in,

For my race car, is it better to connect my pump via the +'ve feed on the ignition switch, or via the oil pressure switch?

Many thanks in advance

I would be inclined to wire it in via a fused relay switched by the ignition switch.

A control from an oil pressure switch would be useful to ensure you don't destroy the engine if you lose pressure.

If you're running carbs, by the time the oil light comes on it may be too late. Also the float chambers will have a good few secs of fuel left in them. You could stop it quicker by just turning the ignition off.

Standard practice is to run via the oil switch and have a bypass for when you key the ignition to provide fuel on startup.

It cannot hurt to have a little protection.

Hi although it has been used as a method of saving the engine when getting low oil preshure.

In reality it is next to usless with a carb as said above the engine will continue to run for 20-30 secs before cuting out.

And on a race car you should have a big enough warning light to enable you to see any flickering of the low warning lamp and easiest to shut it down via the ign or master switch.

Remembering that during a 20 min race the oil lamp will start flickering during cornering and braking. also when at lower rpm during the cool down lap the lamp will usually be on for a good few secs at a time untill you get back upto 1500 or above rpm.

cheers matt
