Clutch slip with fully synth. permanent damage?

Hi all,

I had to change the oil on my r1 engine today. I bought castrol Full synth 10w-40. now i have major clutch slip. I've drained it out and will refill with part synth. But have i caused permanent damage to the clutch?

if you have only covered a small distance i wouldnt think it would do much hard to be honest.
i did the same with mine and its ok

Take it you used car oil, this is a real no no for bikes, the additives in the oil are not compatible with wet clutches.

You may get away with it, but on an old GSXR1100 I cad, the friction liners actually parted company with the plates after using car oil.

Fully synth bike oil is fine, most car oils are now bad for bikes, synth or mineral.

i hate Full synth oil its a bugger.
crack your bike open with it in your engine and you can get your oil light on on most sports bike.

it was definately bike oil (castrol racing stuff). I'll try semi synth tomorrow and hope for the best

I use the halfords fully synth in the R1, never had a problem, and it gets thrashed regularly.

Must be the extra drag the weight of the car puts on the clutch.

In this case you should see no permanent damage.

Castrol R4 and the newer Power 1 racing is notorious on exposing non perfect clutches....if it starts sliping you rapidly worse the situation.

Althou the R4 is an hi spec oil it is really putting cluthes to test.

My personal experience from racing litre bikes : If you want to use hi spec syntethic Motul 300V 5W40 (usually also make gears a bith smother) and Shell´s Avance Ultra 10W40 is a good way to go.

Slipping clutches is rapidly deterioating (spelling?)...save the steel plates and change the frictions asap if your clutch starts to slip....and stay away from CastrolR4/Power 1 racing for "heavy clutch load"


The best ever Castrol racing product: SRF brake fluid....absolutley amazing! OT by all means

no when your bike is very hot and reving out the pump lifts all the oil to the top of your engine so the clutch gets very little oil as its like pee water when hot.
(thats what the tec man from castrol told me )
