SVA pass-woo hoo. Engine woes-boo hoo
Took my car in to Beverley yesterday for SVA re-test. Went through no problem and I drove it home clutching my newly acquired MAC.
On the way back it started misfiring and cutting out and then started making a God awful clattering noise. It seemed to be running very hot when I
took the bonnet off.
Have a look at the video, anyone like to take a punt on what is happening?

Well done on your pass mate!
Not a clue about the engine, but it sounds like a derv now???
Dropped a valve maybe?

Have you an oil pressure gauge or checked the oil level, sounds like big ends to me.

certainly doesn't sound good - hard to tell exactly where it's coming from but it could be a knackered cam or big ends or valves hitting a
piston.
You need to have a look inside, but most likely you need a new engine
Congrats on the pass by the way

I'm wondering if this is a good excuse to find a 20v instead.
Bloody annoying though, at the point I get it through test it breaks.

Pretty sure the noise is coming from within the block rather than the head.
Makes you cringe when you stand next to it.

Same thing happened here on a 20V 4AGE, turned out two big-end bearings failed! They tend to get stuck to the crankshaft after sitting still for a
while, they'll fall out eventually. I've head of ofther occasions of this happenign. Don't run the engine, cause it will make things
worse!
The bearings were a pretty easy fix, just remove the oil pan and you're able to un-tighten the rods, check if the bearings are still attached
firmly and if they're in good shape! If it damaged your crank you'll problably be off cheaper by buying a 20V indeed!

I'll have a look at the big ends. Not sure why they would give up quite so quickly, though. (about 40 miles)

Sounds 'endy' on the face of it, but it seems a little too high pitched - not a heavy enough sound from my experience.
However, dropping the pan will give you a simple yes/no.
I had an MG Midget (A Series) some while back and fitted an aftermarket belt drive for the cam. The cam wheel was very slightly thinner than the
original sprocket; the bolt didn't pull down tight onto the wheel, so it had a few degrees of slack onto the Woodruff key. That gave a similar
noise to yours, Neil. It was rpm-dependent and a pig to diagnose (engine out twice!).
There again, if the engine has been standing a long time, and if the oil system didn't prime on first restart it could easily melt a shell or
many.
Cheers,
John.
PS I once bought an Imp knowing that the big ends were shaky - 'bit of a tap after 10 miles', so I was told. Got home, dropped the sump,
put #3 big end cap on the right way round and subsequently did lots of miles, trials, autotest with no problems!

Big end knock. Is there metel in the oil?
Re: it happening so quickly, do you have oil circulation. Are your oilways free flowing? Are the bearings rollers or shells? If they're shells
and they aren't getting lubricated they will drop out very quickly!
work out how many revolutions the shells have done
40 miles at average of 20mph = 120 minutes of work on average. Assume an average RPM of 3000 x 120 minutes = 360000 revolutions. That would be more
then enough time to wipe a white metal bearing if not lubed. Check the oil for "bits" and drop the sump
Good luck

Does it have a shortened sump? perhaps the crank is catching it? If not, it sounds pretty major...

I had an escort that sounded like that until the exhaust broke off at the manifold... Other than that I can tell you it's not the tappets!
Ford told me the rattling was the alternator so might be as well checking that too...

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't know what sort of oil pressure was building up but I could see it delivering oil over the cams.
I'll have a look up her bottom and see what's going on.
