CVH engine'd Seirra
Hi,
New to the site and this is my first post. After struggling to find a running Sierra with an MOT, I've managed to pick up a 1992 1.8 LX.
It has the cvh engine, which after some reading around the web seems to be an un-loved option.
My kitcar build is is going to be on a v tight budget so I'd rather use the cvh in my donor than source another engine.
Is this going to be an issue going forward ?
I'm still un-decided on using an MK Indy kit or the GBS kit. Which would be better suited to the cvh engine ?

I have used the CVH so has surrey dave and others. One advantage is that it's quite simple to upgrade to a zetec (sump, exhorst man-fold, and
clutch, starter will fit..)...
Exhorst exits on the passenger side, this means heat from the hot headers are not near the master cylinder (not the case for a pinto).
Other problems you might have is that you will probably have to make up your own engine mounts.
I also found that you could re-use the alternator bracket by moving it up two holes and removing some of the casting...
Not popular as little tuning options but if you want a simple cheap option it's not as bad as some would have you believe.. It's quite a
torquey engine, but limited revs (red line about 5500), and power 93bhp out of the box. Also in kit mine is quite fuel efficient about 47mpg and
it's running rich...
The engine crank is smaller (40mm big ends) than the 1600 CVH to get more stroke and hence higher cc. Hence this and other diffrences means the
smaller 1600 engine parts are not the same so you can't use these tuning parts...
I used it as had a lack of cash, and have been happy so far.. If you want to get rid of the engine I might be interested in it for a spare!

Thanks for the reply. Feel more confident now that I haven't wasted my cash on the donor.
I'll be sticking with the cvh, this is my first kitcar and the first "build" of anything I've done car wise. I'm happy
with the usual car maint stuff.... gone as far as a cylinder head swap on an old felica banger I ran for a bit post divorce.
Both Mk and GBS have tried to sell me a new zetec with their kits, but it just pushes my budget way over what I can run to at the mo.

Hi, welcome to the club, cvh is ok, its what i used, whent through sva ok, you can easily update to zetec latter very easily as many of us have, there
r a few cvh parts required to fit the zetec in, or stay with cvh if you dont blow it up as i did, not sure on your chassis choiceses as i made my own,

Don't discount the Zetec as an option, they go on ebay for about 50-100 quid... I would probably think about this now and you have some of the
parts needed.
On the negative side a zetec car will fetch more money seconded hand than a CVH one.. Kinda depends what you want basically..

oh, there you go.... noob in me bawked at the price GBS quoted (£700 for engine with out ancils or almost £2K for everything)
What would be the best zetec to go for ?

For IVA pre 94 1.8 Escort Zetec fits the bill for emmisions and a shorter sump than the Mondeo one. No CAT required.
Look hard enough and you can pick them up for nothing, failing that 99p's on the bay and £10 for a couple. Sorry thats how much I've paid
for the last 3. 99p. £10 and free.

ok sounds like a plan. I'll use the cvh for now with a view to keeping an eye out for cheapy cheapy zetec.
I take it engines mounts are the same ?

got 1800 cvh in mine and just had it rolling roaded - got 145bhp and felt good
it has had some work done though by previous owner - zetec pistons, ported and new cam as well as a 1600 head being fitted
will use it till it blows then will put something bigger in

my diy cvh mounts fitted my zetec (2.0l) with only a slight mod, cvh sump, starter, flywheel, clutch etc, lots more power, u2u if u need any photos

I was told at a recent show that Ford did a twin-cam version of the CVH?
Is this true or is there some bull going around?
What is the Escort RS2000 lump based on?
There have been several on the Bay recently around £150?

My cvh accidentally fell off the forklift and landed in a skip.
Tragic really, as I ended up using a Rover V8

I used a 1.8 CVH for SVA. It was a nice, smooth engine - not as much power as a Zetec but sounds nice and makes for a dead easy build.
