Crummy products driving me nuts...

After 30 years the lock mechanism on an internal door finally gave up - not bad service, all things considered.

I bought a replacement about 4 or 5 months ago...

And this has now failed - totally jammed, as you can see from the picture.

I know it wasn't expensive, but I would expect it last a few years at least. I can't even open it up to see what the problem is, as the new one doesn't have the screw to hold the cover on that the old one had.

I don't know about you lot, but I find it very depressing - crap sold cheap, with absolutely no chance of buying something better. Who's going to stock a better product that costs £x, when places like B&Q sell rubbish at £x/4?

I'm feeling very depressed...

I'd pay two or three times what that cost me, if I thought it would be decent quality - but everyone sells the same tat - there's no choice.

I bet you could get a decent one in Germany or Scandinavia. They seem to hold out for higher quality items.

I agree-Im getting sick of chinese made crap!
dont come across it so much now, cause i refuse to buy it, but used to have to work with-you guessed it- chinese tools where the 'chrome' handle would flake and cut your hands up.
Nowadays Im using tools that were my grandfathers, theyre brilliant!
not just tools, metal and everything.

That'll be a B&Q own crud copy of the Yale version you won't find in the shop because it's held on a different isle nowhere near the door handles, oh and it costs 3x as much...

Have a set of B&Q bits like that; won't fit them due to the fact it looks like it will fail in 2 minutes flat. Instead, I bought a set of Yale originals that appear pretty well built....

You could get a <cough> proper quality <hack> one from Toolstation in Ipswich for the princely sum of 57p. They're guaranteed to be made from the finest Chinese high grade steel, and to last a lifetime (as long as it's the life time of a fruit fly...)

Or you could try these.
They're probably just as crap, but they cost more!

It's made by ERA - but did come from B&Q.
Not sure who makes ERA stuff...

UPDATE: ERA are based in Willenhall, West Midlands! Doesn't mean that my lock didn't come from China though...

say what you like about China but the very sad truth is that, today, most things you can buy that are actually british made are such poor quality that you're better of with the chinese version!

We should start our own company.. the "It ain't cheap s**t Ltd"

I've always wondered about lifetime guarantees, I reckon it's the lifetime of the product...

I have to eat some humble pie - well, a small portion anyway...

I didn't want to go faffing about wasting petrol visiting all the DIY stores, so I had another look at the lock. It simply wouldn't move no matter how hard I tried, short of actually breaking it - so I squirted in some spray white grease. After a fair bit of wiggling it came unstuck, and now works as smoothly as ever (maybe better than before).

So - my original whinge was a bit harsh - but why did they make it from materials that seize together when dry? I couldn't even see what had seized - there's not much in these things. If I could have unscrewed the side plate (as in the original one) I could have fixed it in 10 seconds...
