How much oil does yours use?
Did roughly a 150 miles last week, a bit of A road with about 70 miles on the M1 at a cruise of roughly 7,200rpm.
Checked the oil tonight and i have lost about half an inch on the sight glass (2003 R1 5PW).
This normal? ? ? ?

Don't know about the 5pw but my 5VY uses virtually nothing (maybe 100ml/1000miles tops).

I have a 5pw r1 (bike) and mine barely uses any oil. Travelled Europe last year and done 4000 mile and burnt about 250ml of oil. When the engine is in
the bike it cruises 80mph at about 5500rpm but this shouldn't make much difference. They are all different though so if not leaks or smoke I
wouldn't worry to much

No oil leaks and doesnt burn it.
Is 7,200rpm a "safe" cruise speed?

Yeh my gsxr1000 powered kit does about the same although I'm in the middle of building a new axle with a better cruising ratio in it. I have had
my r1 about 4 years and it does spend most of it's life in the upper end of the rev range and I have never had a problem.

If the level is going down then it has to go somewhere. That means either leaking externally or being burnt either via the bores, valve stems or
through the crankcase breathers. It can't just vanish.
I cruise mine happily at 8000+ on continental roads.

Its running a baffle plate. Perhaps it doesnt like the high crusing?

Bikes are designed to run on the limit though so wouldn't of thought 7500rpm is a problem. Mine never burns oil doing that or often higher. What
I would check though is that your baffle plate is not somehow trapping the oil above it.

I have never needed to top mine up during the year before its annual oil change, that or its so overfilled and i hadn't noticed

My last engine used ALOT but after stripping it down it showed the bores had worn so must have been a high miler or abused when in its original bike.
But my new engine (older model so could still be a high miler) doesnt use a drop and after checking the level for a year after every drive out im now
starting to leave the bonnet on when i get home due to it never loosing any.
However, i have noticed driving about in the kitcar that many bikes that pass me smell of burning oil so i think its a common thing for them to use
some oil. Check the rear wheel behind the exhaust for color changes, my wheel slowly tarnished and even now i can get it back tot he original color as
it must have damaged the paint.
Sorry about my spelling, im an engineer and only work in numbers.

Just a couple of points,
when I fitted the baffle plate in my 4xv ( came off a hill climb guy ) the instuctions said to overfill by ? 250ml.
Maybe if you haven't got one fitted might be an idea to fit an oil catch tank, Don't waste your money on something posh a coke can and a
piece of pipe is good enough,
Top it back up and see if it blows any out, maybe just a simple case of over overfilling.

UPDATE.
Took it for a rolling road this week and topped up the oil.
On the dyno, the breather is venting to atmosphere, the engine has no leaks and it is not showing signs out of the exhaust.
Im going to fit an oil catch tank to see how much gets trapped.
Oh... 140bhp at the wheels.
