Anybody else having Excel 97 problems after recent MS update ?

Anybody else got this problem.
Running Office 97 on XP after recent MS update Excel 97 from MS Office 97 is giving occasional problems saving files and using clipboard, it looks to me like it is not releasing memory after use. Not hardware related as problem continued after format up fresh install on different PC .

planned obsolescence. Microsoft could solve the problem if they wanted to, but its in their interest not to.

I am having quite a lot of unusual happenings with Excel 2007 since the upgrade - sometimes when clicking on a new cell and entering data after switching from another program excel vanishes from the screen for a second or two and then reappears - fortunately it remembers what you have typed so you don't have to retype - also freezes up occasionaly and have to re-open. (Win 7 Home Proff. 64 bit with 8 gig RAM). task manager says plenty of free RAM.

Virus check and Malwarebyte finds nothing.
