Silverline Tools

Anybody used the Silverline 115mm grinder? They are being offerred very cheaply, and with a 3 year guarantee.

I normally use Hitachi, which I've found solid and reliable, and have been lasting more than 3 years with everyday use.

Cheers,
Nev.

Pretty budget brand in my experince, obviously up from Ronson, Amtech and alike, but i consider them to be on a par with Laser, Draper etc.

Have used a few of their tools, drills etc and not been atall impressed... spend the extra £20 and get something "proper"

Not good, but OK for things like spanners etc.

For an angle grinder, I'd avoid. Wait for Homebase or B&Q to have a sale on one of their Bosch, AEG or B&D ones. I picked up an AEG 115mm grinder from B&Q for about £25 and it's a beast (in a good way).

Thanks Fellas, Looks like another Hitachi or a DeWalt. Cheapos seem to cost the same/yr in the end I suppose, but don't have the reliability most need. You gets what you pay for.

Cheers,
Nev.

I replaced the brushes in an old £6.99 grinder a couple of weeks ago. I keep a few on the go at a time and last week this one conked but is now going again, then another one I was using a clean and strip disc on did a terminal melt down so I decided to splash out and bought a new Metabo WE14-125 to match my 9". It's worlds apart from the cheap ones with a 1400 watt motor and 7000 to 10,800 variable speed and no slow down when you push it a bit.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Makita 9554NB 4½" 240V Angle Grinder about £40 from http://www.my-tool-shed.co.uk
Just great compared to my previous B&D one.

Just had a look through the Cromwell catalogue. Didn't realise these things are now available in power ranges from ~400W up to 1400W. That's near 2HP in a 4 1/2" hand grinder! Tim Taylor would be pleased.

Cheers,
Nev.
