strange revs problem

I was out on a run at the weekend but was getting erratic revs when the car was idling/sitting in traffic - sometimes it was near normal eg below 2000 rpm but other times it was as high as 6000. Once I started pushing the clutch pedal when the revs were high they would again drop back to normal idling levels

has anyone come across this before or have any idea how I could fix this

thanks in advance

My first thoughts are straight to the throttle bodies/cables, then the idle control valve on the throttle bodies. One thing that might get you - check the TBs are actually clamped in properly.

thanks for the help - will check out the throttle bodies first as they were removed a while back

might also tighten the throttle return spring as a precaution
