Estate 4x4 towcar
I need a cheapish towcar which will be reliable (something my A6 seems to have forgotten to be able to do). I need an estate for the dog and would
prefer 4WD. Budget is around £4K and I was thinking about this
Subaru 3.0R Outback
Thoughts? This is to tide me over for 3 months or so until the A6 is sold and then I'll getting something in the £15-20K bracket.

Our discovery will be up for about that sort of money in the near future. 2001 TD5 Auto 5 seat GS, brilliant tow car, very reliable. Only replacing it
because we want something we can sleep in too!

This?
Suitable family estate
Or this?
Because you can!
I guess it is clear where my money would go... Although a legacy outback or maybe even a forester would not be a bad choice as well.

I have a 55 plate A6 3.0TDi S-line currently which has spend 2.5 months of the last 6 in the garage due to water ingress. I need something reliable,
which probable means Japanese, to hold me over for a short period of time (3-6 months).
As an ex-Biker I would have emotional issues buying a Volvo given how many have given me near death experiences in the past.
I thought the Subaru Legacy/Outback would fit the bill....

Only think I would say, is if only keeping it for 3 months how easy will it be to sell on a large engine petrol. May be better with a basic diesel
estate if buy for right price should be able to sell it on in 3 months for same price

Have you considered a Honda CRV? Capable, reliable and presently undervalued.
You'd be surprised how quickly the sales people at B&Q try and assist you after ignoring you for the past 15 minutes when you try and start a
chainsaw

The wife and I have been looking to replace a Subaru 2.5 outback.
Mostly used for local shops etc. but has to tow our caravan.
The search often brings us back to the Outback.
The 3.0 option wolud be nice apart from the fuel economy.
Check the tax band, I think it's a high one on the 3.0
The 2.5 we have, considering it's a large 4x4 petrol estate a does not do bad.
If you do get a H6 out back check out the sound they can make LINKY

H6 or the 2.5 really, depends on purchase price. I like the idea of the H6.
Longer term I'm looking at something like a Discovery3 as a possible.

At least it ain't german! so it might be reliable
Still, it's cheap enough so you can get a towbar fitted!

Renault and reliable are not normally words I expect to see in the same sentence
So has anyone experience of the Legacy or Outback?

Yes
I have a 2000 Outback.
The main thing to look out for on the 2.5 are head gaskets on the near side bank.
Often go at the 50-60K mile mark.
from 2000 the head leaks coolant.
Even with the leak ours only lost about a liter of coolant in 9 years, before I fitted the new head gasket.
apart from the normal service parts / tyres . It's had new drop links, and rear exhaust box.
Would I get anther one... Yes.
