Excellent programme! Don't remember this as a kid (I was only 5)! Nikki had some balls to go out racing again after a few weeks with those
injuries! I will have to watch it again.

Good to see Ferrari up to their tricks especially about the width of hunts car. If you cannot win on the track use the rule book :-)

The real story about the width of Hunt's car was nothing was changed in the rear suspension from the previous year and the width measured
across the wheel rims was exactly the same, the only thing that had changed was the tyres. Goodyear had changed the shape of the tyre carcass so
that it bulged a few more mm over the edge of the rim.
In the Teddy Meyer era McLaren were still missing the solid engineering in input of Bruce McLaren and they weren't the ultra techy outfit
they became after they merged with Ron Dennis's Project 4. In the early 1970's technical progress was slow and a car design could
serve for several season Hunt's car the long serving was essentially a debugged carbon copy of the Lotus 72. The secret of the M23 success
was designers Gordon Coppuck's common sense , ex-Lotus driver Emmerson Fittapaldi's knowledge of the Lotus 72 development and the fact
that McLaren had an Nicholson DFV engine and a unique 6 speed gearbox package that was superior to all the other Ford Cosworth powered runners.
McLaren's mechanics were the best in the business but they lacked any understanding of aero at one point after a mid-season upgrade they
suffered a mysterious drop off in rear end grip in high speed corners, the cause proved difficult to tracked down and wasn't cured by refitting
the old spec suspension, body and aero components, it turned out to accommodate the updated components they had moved the oil cooler slightly. The
new position caused turbulence on the air flow to the rear wing causing loss of down force and increased drag.

watched it last night. have to say one of the best racing docs i have seen in a long long time. very well done to the people that produced it.

btw not sure if people have seen the adverts but they have made a feature film about lauda v hunt. comes to the cinema in September.

It is interesting to consider what would have happen had Hunt driven for Ferrrari and Lauda for McLaren.
If Hunt had driven for Ferrari he would never have won championship but Old Man Ferrari would have loved him. Lauda on the other did pretty well

Don't recall much of it at the time but that is ^^^^ definitely true - didn't they say that when he got in the car for the first time, he
was unable to drive off .... but willed himself to take part in the race.
Shame he "bottled out" of the JP GP but then it was stated that he was unable to see due to the rain and lack of eyelids.

Caught it on iplayer, really enjoyed it
Loved Hunts comment when he first saw Lauda after the accident- ' You're the only bloke I know who's been in a fire and come out
better looking!!' 
3rd race from end of championship and all looked lost, got hammered the night before the race and sh@gged the lead singer of the band they'd
been to see. Still half-cut and won the race!! RESPECT!!
