Harness regluations

I can find no requirements within the regulatons for what type of harness is allowed.

Looking at a few vendors, it seems you can get a 4 point for £40, but the FIA ones start at £100 ish.

So, what harness if any must I have and what harnesses have other people gone for?

Go for 6 point - this is a safety issue for Pete's sake!!!!!!

Not sure on eligibility, FIA ones are needed for international events, but different rules apply for national events. MSA Blue Book should help (I haven't got mine to hand as I am currently abroad!). Otherwise email Mike Topp, the championship eligibility chap, he's very helpful.

John, received this today in response to your question

quote:

Minimum seatbelt regs in blue book at national level require MSA approved belts i.e. to E2 standards I believe. Only have to be FIA type if racing in Europe or International level races. From personal experience I would ALWAY use 3" wide straps as the spread the load better in the event of an accident ( and yes I have used 3" belts and it still HURT!)

John, An update
quote:

Minimum requirement for a Locost/Westfield type kit car is 4 points. However, I would always recommend 6 point (to include crutch strap) as you are reclining or semi reclining. Without a crutch strap you would submarine down the footwell in the event of frontal impact. As I mentioned earlier I would always use 3" lap & strap type to help spread the load on your body. Having been in a 70mph frontal impact in a Westfield I feel I have person experience of what is best! I was wearing 3" straps and it hurt. I hate to think what 2" would have been like.

I just bought the next round of bits for my build and I included a 6-point OMP FIA approved harness with 4" shoulder straps and 3" waist straps, think it was about £120 from Demon Thieves.

I too have been told to get a 6-pointer with a MINIMUM of 3" shoulder straps for safety. Same person who recommened this (who has done a lot of racing, including Westfields and Caterhams) says he wouldn't get in a 7-type car without a full cage.
