So, I was the lucky man who bought the Indy off Sean last week and so far learning a lot about the car - mostly about how the cooling system works - I
had a fairly eventful trip back to Ross on Wye after one of the pipes came off the top water rail and this prematurely ended the life of the water
pump seal to boot - still, easy fix and it's back up and running again.
Pipe came off!
I haven't experienced an effectively closed cooling set up before with no expansion tank and after a few days of fretting, realised I was
overfilling the system and the water it was expelling when hot was simply it finding it's own level and since then it has run spot on - much of
the joy of these cars is about making them 'your own' but having built or rebuilt a few cars in the past I don't mind a bit of fettling
and tweaking.
Basic history, have had a Tiger Cat (Pinto), Fisher Fury (Fireblade), Lotus Elise and Exige and now back to having a toy in the garage for when the
sun shines.

Hi, welcome. Nice looking car there.
Zetecs are never happy without the right cooling circuits. It shouldn't chuck water out and indeed should have a header tank. It would be an
easy fix to install one, best place is as near the rad as possible on the bottom hose.
If you don'tfancy that then waterless coolant would work better than water.

It doesn't chuck it out now that it's found its level - it was because I had overfilled the system and it was venting the excess (or
that's what I think has happened!). Yesterday it was 24 degrees and it didn't lose any coolant after a 20 mile or so fast test drive so
think it's OK now - I was going to fit an expansion tank before working out what was going on...

Its a chemical solution that contains no H2O., so it doesnt expand when hot, has higher boiling point, the list goes on...
But for me is far too expensive!

I've seen a few cars running without filters (i'm sure my old Escort Mk1 used to way back when!) - some even with the bonnet cut so the trumpets are stuck out into fresh air sucking in small children as they drive past!
With mine being behind the bonnet (i.e. not exposed) would I need socks or filters?
I was wondering if I should just stick some old tights over the end (if I can find some my wife doesn't want!)

There is another chap kicking about who's bought a MNR rolling chassis who I'm sure is in Ross but I can't remember his user name.
Looks like there's a whole bunch of us from Ross! I grew up around there and my family are still there.
Ross has some nice roads for pootling around on a sunny afternoon, but I don't remember any that would be fun to drive fast on. They're all
so narrow!

dave Vizard did some tests back in the day - they found that just the general muck and dust that got sucked in over a day at the track was enough to coat the valve train etc. wit h a compound similar to grinding paste
so the short answer is running without proper filters will shorten the life of the engine, besides a good filter won't give any noticeable loss of power
