Amazing what you find when you're looking for something else
I know attaching a bike engine to a car gearbox has been talked about on here many times (admittedly mostly for reverse or overdrive purposes rather
than a direct replacement for the bikes gearbox) but I'd never actually seen anyone really do it until now.........
Hayabu
sa on an MX5 Gearbox
Sadly it stops before they drive it - clever (if it works as they anticipate) but I'm not sure it's worth the effort tbh
No worse than some lunatic who used a Merlin engine in his homebuilt contraption.
Do wonder about the effects of a flywheel clutch action on the not designed, or ever intended for, thrust absorption Bearing capabilities of a Bike
engine.
Love it. Proper engineering.
holeshots been doing the hartley engines for a while

dont look at the prices tho
Those prices are eye watering - I'd be terrified of trashing it!
Doesn't it defeat part of the point of having a bike engine?
You lose the 6 speed sequential box and add a load more weight back in.
i doubt the bike box would take the power for long
I noticed a while ago that they haven't updated in a long time. Not a good sign I guess. As for "why?", the engine is still lighter than the MX5 unit, and probably more reliable.
I'm not sure you've read the article properly speedystew - the only gearbox used is the MX5 one. It's a clever idea if you read the whole article (both parts) but I really can't see the point tbh. Interesting to see it attempted in real life tho
You're joking aren't you RK?? the MX5 engine is way overdesigned for it's life in an MX5 as it was originally designed as a turbo engine. It's heavy and hard to tune n/a and in terms of 90's 16v twin cam engines the 4AGE is a much better design BUT less reliable than a bike engine in a car???
got to admit i did not read the article, the hartley engines are bespoke bottom ends based on busa top ends 1600 cc 4 cylinder producing 260 bhp n/a
and turbo to 620 bhp, thats why they dont use the bike box
and the v8 is automotive porn
