non-rigid material - Can someone define what a non-rigid material is in relation to the Dash or instrument panel of a car.

1mm of Foam?
10 mm of Foam?
100mm of Foam?

How hard foam? Very dense, Very soft ?

I saw another bit saying pressure from thumb should'n;t feel the plate behind for it to qualify as non-rigid? What size of thumb pressing how hard? To point of dislocation or what ?

Something that bends. My dash is ply covered in vinyl with no foam and it passed. As long as it meets radius and projection criteria it should be alright.

does this imply that you have to pad your dash? i would personally prefer a 'solid' dash made out of a nice piece of hardwood veneer... I know the radiuses (is that a word?) have to be larger but that isn't insurmountable.....

If you have a padded dash then the radius at the bottom of said dash only needs to be 5mm to pass, if it's solid like mine the radius needs to be 19mm. I would guess 1mm foam behind vynal would be ok for 5mm radius but it will always be down to the examiners intepritation of the rules so go over the top to be safe.

Ok thas quite interesting, I had assumed that I would still need a 19mm radius at the bottom, If my dash had a solid part (sheet of MDF).

I plan to pad mine with Camping mat about 5mm thick so I guess a radius bigger than 5mm and I OK for the SVA.


As I understand you can have a hard dash (Real WOOD) as long as you get you raduii (not Sure) correct.
