I am just filling in the SVA test application form and it states that I need various receipts for major parts in the car. Since I bought the car as a half finished project, all I have is a receipt from the previous owner stating that I bought the car from him with a 1600 sierra Ford pinto engine and escort running gear installed. There is no reference to a donor vehicle registration number though so I assume that isn't enough is it?

To what extent do they expect receipts to be kept? (I am able to get in contact with the previous owner and Im sure he will try to help me if he can).

Essentially you have to demonstrate to DVLA/SVA that it was amateur built.
It would be better to have a letter from the guy you bought it from stating that it was an un-finished, part-built project which required you to fit most of the major components. That's assuming he was an amateur builder himself.
I bought mine in the same way, didn't have many photos of the build but supplied them with all my receipts plus 4 sheets of A4 detailing where the components came from and by whom they were fitted. Recent comments may mean that you need photos of you fitting the engine/gearbox etc

PS you will need some sort of proof of the engine's age for emission tests. Don't know much about Fords but think there's a part of Burton's website which may help relate the engine number to age.

Thanks for that, it looks as though I am in a slightly tricky situation then. As we speak, I have one reciept to say it was a half finished project from the bloke I bought it from and nothing else... sh!t.

Has anyone got any ideas on how to get round this?!

I'm also in a similar situation to you, except it sounds like you have a LOT more receipts than me.
The only receipt I have is for my immobilser!
All the parts were brought for cash from scrapyards, mates etc.
I was under the impression that you can't just 'magic' up some invoices ,as they have to be letter headed.
That said, I have been building for close to 7 years on this project, & have a VERY extensive photo diary of the build (2000 pics)
I plan to put these on a disk with a covering letter & hope for the best.
Perhaps the chap you brought from has some pics he could send you.

My car was bought as a second hand kit so I had reciept for purchase from previous owner, copy of reciept from scrapyard for the donor, copy of the sales literature, ebay reciepts, B&Q reciepts, Halfords reciepts, Burtons, CBS, Tifosi and any other reciept i could lay my hands on, all neatly presented for SVA and DVLA (duplicated so both folders contained much the same stuff) in clip folders.
I was a bit short on photos even though its my job but decided to overwelm both VOSA and DVLA with "Evidence" quantity not quality was my motto, i even had a letter from the previous owner saying he did not have the original kit reciept but did have a scanned copy.
Got a letter from the original kit manufacturer for the design weights.
Folder runs to 35 sleves and 60 documents.
OTT i know but even if you only have a few reciepts, bank statements, ebay/paypal it soon adds up.
Get to it and see where you are light.
