Registration and MOT
marmot0 - 17/2/09 at 04:52 PM

I know this has been covered a hundred times before, just trying to get my car registered at Sidcup and been told I will get a Q plate which is fine but they are insisting on an MOT. Is there any documentation anywhere that states
otherwise.
Cheers

theres an official DVLA leaflet which clearly states no MOT is required...

There's no documentation to say it, that's the problem. However, the general consensus is that some DVLA offices demand an MOT because they work on the principal of "if in doubt".... Ask them what they expect a 45 minute MOT test to show that a 3 1/2 hour SVA test hasn't....

Now of course there are some things that would pass SVA but fail MOT but hey....

Really? Is it available in the Locostbuilders shop with the unending supply of unobtainium and left handed hammers? I would love to see that DVLA leaflet- does anyone have a copy of it?

I can help you out there, MOT will tell you if the tyres have enough tread on them or are undamaged. (all SVA cares about is their speed rating, mad innit).

im away from home until easter but heres a snippit from direct.gov.uk

'This is where a kit of new parts is added to an existing vehicle or old parts are added to a kit comprising a manufactured body, chassis or monocoque bodyshell. The general appearance of the vehicle will change and result in a revised description on the registration certificate.

A vehicle will retain its donor registration mark if either the original unmodified chassis or unaltered monocoque bodyshell and two other major components are used. If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used (or an altered chassis or bodyshell from an existing vehicle) together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle. An ESVA, SVA or MSVA test will be required to register the vehicle.

Where there are insufficient parts from a donor vehicle or in cases where the original registration mark is unknown, an ESVA, SVA or MSVA certificate will be required to register the vehicle and a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.'

it doesnt say anything about MOT. it doesnt say anything about taxing either, however as far as im aware a kitcar cannot be registered without taxing it.

dont see what the big deal is anyway. MOT's cost me £30 and its probably worth doing anyway...

Some further info here

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_4022112

My declared build year was 2005 1st MOT due 1st Jan this year. The 3 year period starts at the 1st Jan after the build year.

They don't test the horn in SVA, or the tread depth of the tyres.

Have you taken the time to look at the bewildering variety of taxation classes for vehicles? It is British govenment in microcosm - imagine if all gov't departments were the same, you'd need armies of civil servants and loads of taxation to pay for them, and no-one would understand the rules because they would make it up as they go along.
Oh, hang on....

Yup. Tyre thread and horn. I also don't think there's anything in SVA about cracks in the windscreen- as long as it's got an E mark

Thanks for the replies. Rather trying to get to speak to anyone at the DVLA who knows just gonna get the thing MOT'd so that I can get on the road for the weekend

Some DVLA offices do the inspection before the SVA so how could/would you have an MOT then. When I had my DVLA inspection the car was little more than a few main components loosely bolted together, certainly nowhere even approaching an MOT-able state.

Only slight issue there is you'll probably end up needign one every year then once you're on their books
