SVA Gearstick
Scoobythedog - 27/2/09 at 12:05 AM

Currently got an old red snooker ball sat on the top of the gearstick, will this pass SVA, or is there any rules that apply to having a diagram of the gears on it ?

it should be ok, mine didn't have and indication of gears on it and the inspector didn't say anything about it

same here no gear indications for SVA and no problems with the test.

Mine passed SVA with an Snoooker "8" ball on it. (my car is a Black V8, so looks good)
So did Snuggs, he even has a kiddies 8 ball (small one) on his oil dipstick.

It will meet all the radius and sharp edge requirements etc.

I hot melt guled mine on.
However, DONT put the glue in the hole in the ball. It goes cold and you cant fit it.

Gently heat the end of the metal gearstick with a small blowlamp, then rub the gluestick on the lever until you have enough glue on it. Pop on th ball and press down. You can still heat the metal gearstick lower down below the ball if it goes a bit too cold before you have fully positioned the ball. It just takes a good while to cool down!

This worked very well indeed.

... and being pedantic, that's a pool ball then

As long as the ball is a round 1 you'll be fine. Mine was round with a flat for a badge on top....FAIL!!!!
Needless to say a nice round one was fitted for the retest!!

why was a flat a fail then?

Marcus - 1/3/09 at 03:42 PM

It was the radius from the ball to the flat...there was none, it was a sharp transition.

But again as a pedantic, if the top of the gear knob is less than 150mm above the seat base then it's exempt anyway.

Alan...

My gear lever is about 150mm long and sits on top of the transmission tunnel. The top of this is about 110mm above the seat base, so 260 altogether....as I said FAIL
