Design weights / axles ???
Jasper - 18/2/04 at 03:47 PM

On the SVA form, I'm a little confused by the design weights. I recon my car weighs 450kg, cos most BEC's do. Do I just split this between the two axles?

I seems to remember something about total weight including passenger and full tank???

Help.......

And how much do I send them - is £160 right?

Not totaly sure about this one, but i do know that the sva man wants your writen weight to be heavier than he finds on his scales !! Andy found out nearly to his cost !!

MK tell you to put 900 kg on the form. I cant see many indys weighing that much. So i think as long as it is reasonble go a fair way above what you reckon, so you dont get caught out.

Hi Jasper

My MAC certificate said max design weights. I think Ive got a copy of my old SVA application form at home somewhere.

Axle 1 - 400kg
axle 2 - 400kg

but sure glad it dont weigh 800kgs !!

Cheers

Don't forget that what you're quoting is not the actual weight - it's the maximum allowed per axle. This is why the tester will add the weight of 2 standard humans and their luggage to the actual weight, and the result should be less than the max design weights.

David's got it, in theory our cars have been designed with a max load weight on each axle. So the SVA man wants to know that the weight of the fully loaded car is within the design limits.

I think these design weight figures are used for the braking calculations. ie will the brakes be able to stop the vehicle when fully loaded. Does this ring a bell to anyone who has been through the test? I'm not going to be too over enthusiastic with my figures just incase.

The figures they check against the design weights are taken from the weighbridge at the SVA center and calculated with two passengers (of 68kg?) set at a certain point. These are plugged into the sort of fulcrum formulas and the figures they come up with needs to be less than design weights.

Another confusing part of the SVA? Surely not...
