open sided cars?
blakep82 - 10/5/09 at 07:11 PM

would something like the MEV rocket have any any issued with open sides under IVA?

you could lose a leg out of there!

you've all seen these pictures...

i'd like to be able to be able to use it without doors on sometimes. or maybe SVA it without. the doors are impractical really, so i'd rather not use them most of the time

open cars are fine for IVA but the radius test will be carried out on any accessible areas. BUT they can only go in 200mm.

blakep82 - 10/5/09 at 07:25 PM

radius test sounds fine

i'll go out and get another photo of something else in a minute, something which te tester may frown upon, but its not any kind of issue i don't think, just something that looks 'unfinished'

here's the other one. the 'sill' on the body doesn't go under the floor of the chassis. as long as he doesn't have any issued with that, then fine

The more I see of that pickup the more I like it.
i'd still be tempted in the other IVA option though

i cant see an issue with the sill. but i imagine a lot will be down to the examiners interpretation...

could that go through SVA as a commercial vehicle?

thanks Tony!

thats the other option tony was talking about

i don't know, i think with that chassis i'd struggle to convince anyone it was a commercial, and the suspension definitely won't be up to it.

i was thinking about panelling up to the first horizontal bars with something like aluminium maybe? perspex was considered, and now maybe some of that black nylon woven cloth stuff that looks a bit like carbon fibre. if it looks rubbish as carbon i could paint over it.

anyway, as long as i can get away with leaving it open thats fine. think doors would be more of a problem for IVA than without, so i'll go without. didn't know if he'd frown on the gap between the floor and sill though, as long as its got some edge trim though should be fine

Can I ask a question here, please do not think I am being funny in anyway as this is a genuine query.

You are obviously building as a racing pick-up and have done the frame to match choice of engine etc.
Will it be stronger and lighter then taking a stock pick-up chassis and putting the same engine in. What are the advantages once you have body panels back on it?

Cheers

Adrian

its a very good question
i bought the chassis from someone who used to race it, so it was at one time a racing car. body panels are all second hand racing ones too

in racing form they are ballasted to about 875kg, not sure how much they have to add, so mine will probably be a bit heavier

i think it will be stronger and lighter, but there'll be nothing else like it around
bodywork really covers up all the suspension and stuff, so no projection issues on that for me

thunderace - 10/5/09 at 10:23 PM

i know where you stay its up the very top lol been there loads of times.

blakep82 - 10/5/09 at 10:25 PM

ha ha gourock actually, but people are more likely to have heard of greenock but yes, up the top!

thunderace - 10/5/09 at 10:39 PM

worked for granada as a repair man and covered you area for 2 years we had a shop near the bus station on the corner.
the trafic warden hunted me all the time.
as we had no parking outside the shop.
sad to say i know most streets in central scotland after working for granada and dvr for over 10 years .

blakep82 - 10/5/09 at 10:41 PM

nothing wrong with that! been here for 26 years years, still couldn't tell you the name of the street behind my house lol

AdrianH - 10/5/09 at 10:42 PM

Thanks for the answer.

If it is heavier the the weight, I guess you have the option of going for a fibre glass body, you could probably do a complete front end in one piece, I wonder if you could use the fitted body panels as a mule, paint with mold release and fibreglass over, then remove and use to make the sections.

No must be a silly thought that. Good luck with it.

Adrian

blakep82 - 10/5/09 at 10:46 PM

ah, well the panels are already fibreglass and kevlar so that saves a lot of weight too

Having just sva tested my car, the examiner said that under IVA my car would fail because of the open sides, although he didn't quantify why.
Irrespective of the open sides, my car had no projections that would have failed so I am not sure what he meant.
