I have seen a 'classic' car for sale locally and I wanted to check its details on the DVLA website to see if its been scrapped, or when it
was last taxed, but as the reg number is not the normal layout of numbers and letters it just says 'not on our system'.
So is there another way of tracking down this info?
Basically I think I could approach the owner with a view to buying it, but I am worried its been 'scrapped'. The reason for this is that the
owner of the car owns a scrap yard, and this car is in it, but not piled up with the 'scrap' cars.
So firstly is there a way I can find out?
Secondly, if the worst case is its been scrapped, could it be put back on the road?

You can (and should) HPI any car before buying it.
I guess that if a 'classic' is in a scrap yard, the temptation is to think it might have got there under the government scrappage scheme and
the scrap man thinks it's too good to scrap so he's trying to sell it. I can't imagine that anyone could get away with that except to
break it for spares maybe.
If it is scrapped but not under the scrappage scheme, you might be able to re-register it with an age related plate?
No idea about docs, that would have to be looked into.
But if its been 'scrapped' then surely re-registering any car thats been scrapped is not possible? Or we could all do it, and I could have
that white Evo that top gear had the other week 
(obviously before it was shot at)

Well in the past I have known of classic motorbikes built from parts which came from presumably scrapped vehicles and then got them registered with
age related plates.
So I guess it's similar with cars?
