I was told today that we may have to pay for insurance for all cars you own ,on road or off any one seen or read this any where?

yes, that rumour has been giong round; there was something again about it in the telegraph.

The only way to avoid a fine will be to go through the bureaucratic process of making a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency

Yes, it's a new law to clamp down on uninsured drivers. You will not have to insure cars which are on SORN, however.

It just means that you can't keep your car taxed over the winter and only insure when you use it, for example. People with historic cars and free tax will have to SORN them over the winter instead of just keeping the free tax going.

It's a pain for those of us who are law abiding, but a SORN takes all of 1 minute to do online so it's hardly a big problem.

It avoids the need for the police to actually do anything - the computer sends you an automatic fine if not on the insurance database.
