Surely something has moved since build as it would not have passed SVA like that.
Could be knackered engine mounts

Even with the standard Pinto alternator on a fabricated mount I've got more than 20mm clearance around the steering column.

just been out and had a look and it is the altenator mount its near, maybe 5mm its not rubbing but more knocking against it with the engine vibrations, ill get a pick up in a bit.

My Pinto alternator was only a couple of mm away from my column , so i changed from the standard belt 10x863 to a 10x850 as this was about a small as i could go, tight to slip over the pulley but fine when it's in place.

Mine has quite a bit of clearance.

I made a lower alternator mount which is in essence just a bracket like |____| and the bolt goes though. I use the standard sierra alternator. The belt its something like 795mm. Seems quite a bit of clearance.
