I work on the old TRL site in Crowthorne. There's a company on that site that runs speed and driver awareness courses. Half the people on the awareness courses turn up with a sat nav placed right in front of them like they are watching TV...

Rospa say

“Position the sat nav safely, out of the way of airbags and not obstructing a driver’s vision.”

Which doesn’t help much!!

I once saw someone with a satnav attached smack in the middle of the screen, so the unit will have been under his rear view mirror - very sensible

I find the only place to put it is either down near the gearstick which means taking your eyes off the road to look at the map), or in the middle of the screen at the very bottom, so it's in easy view but out of any important vision areas (covers up that half moon shape you get where the wipers don't clean)

put it in the bottom right hand corner of the windscreen...

and when the mount fails when you have the window open. you can stop to go and pick it up

i just stand mine by itself on the actual dash board, infront of the clocks. But thats because i lost the sucker...

I put mine bottom right tucked right in. Its tidy and well out of view.... Except roundabout apexs then I look out the side window!

David Jenkins - 18/10/09 at 10:53 AM

Mine sits behind the steering wheel... just fits nicely, and doesn't get in the way of the clocks, 'cos it's a Yaris so they're in the middle of the dash!

I believe that mounting a satnav on the windscreen is illegal in California (little bit of irrelevant trivia...)

blakep82 - 18/10/09 at 11:20 AM

i'm surprised cars are still legal in california lol

I find the safest place for them is in the bin....
no substitute for a collins road atlas !!

greed1 - 18/10/09 at 06:14 PM

where do you put the atlas across the screen

Read the map, memorise the route and drive to destination... unless you're a girl ! (with the exception of those who frequent here).

Bottom right for me, or was when I had one that worked. I've had as many near misses with sat nav users as with mobile phone users. A friend was knocked off his bike by someone who didn't see him because of one mounted on middle of the screen.
