I work on the old TRL site in Crowthorne. There's a company on that site that runs speed and driver awareness courses. Half the people on the
awareness courses turn up with a sat nav placed right in front of them like they are watching TV...

I once saw someone with a satnav attached smack in the middle of the screen, so the unit will have been under his rear view mirror - very sensible
I find the only place to put it is either down near the gearstick which means taking your eyes off the road to look at the map), or in the middle of
the screen at the very bottom, so it's in easy view but out of any important vision areas (covers up that half moon shape you get where the
wipers don't clean)
put it in the bottom right hand corner of the windscreen...

and when the mount fails when you have the window open. you can stop to go and pick it up

I put mine bottom right tucked right in. Its tidy and well out of view.... Except roundabout apexs then I look out the side window!
Mine sits behind the steering wheel... just fits nicely, and doesn't get in the way of the clocks, 'cos it's a Yaris so they're in
the middle of the dash!
I believe that mounting a satnav on the windscreen is illegal in California (little bit of irrelevant trivia...)
i'm surprised cars are still legal in california lol
