Put it wherever you like, as long as it's accessible and on a part of the vehicle not liable to replacement. Note that the VIN stamping must be on the RH side of the vehicle though.

Mines stamped into the chassis with a centre punch on the OSR of the chassis, in te engine bay.

Old VW bugs had them in the front behind the spare tyre, under the rear seat, and in the engine compartment.
