Quick question - If you have a BEC car which passed through IVA with the ability to reverse (electric starter motor jobie), could that 'reverse function' be then removed and still pass its MOT three years later ?

Don't think there is a requirement to be able to reverse for mot - so yes you could take it out - but why would you want to?

If you take it out you should inform your insurance company. They probably won't care, but if the worst happens they could use it as an excuse to avoid paying, especially if the reverse could avoided the incident.

Reverse is not a requirement of MOT (like rev lights aren't an MOT req' but are at IVA).

There is a requirement that a car should be able to drive on to the MOT lane under it's own power, I think. Some could argue that it also had to drive off, but seeing as it wasn't a requirement to have reverse when mine passed then it's hard to argue that. Then again a horn or tread on the tyres weren't on SVA but are needed for MOT.

Thanks for all the replies - i was asking from more of a cost point of view.

I think most electric reverse kits are about £500, and as we know many BEC's went through SVA without any reverse (and are operating happily without it).

It just seams like a lot of money for something that is not often going to be needed, so i was thinking about the possibility of fitting one and then selling it on.
