Hi all, my friends car which is a BEC (looks like warner R4) which I posted about last week is due for IVA on Tuesday.

The emissions are high at

CO 0.06 ( I think), Limit 0.3 - OK
HC 169, Limit 200 - OK
Lambda 1.76, Limit -0.97-1.03 - NOT GOOD!!

It's got a 2001 GSXR 1000 engine and std management, it's got a cat apparently, in the silencer, which is too far away from the engine now to get hot and actually work. It's not got a lambda sensor.

What can we do to get the lambda down on it without spending too much on bits that will end up in the bin post test.

One way to cheat would be to inject air into the exhaust to burn the excess fuel.
What I cannot understand is how can you meet emissions hc and CO with fueling soo far off.
Could ther be a mistake with one/ all of the readings?

I'd say there's something wrong with your measuring kit, no engine would run that lean at Lambda = 1.76 - that's an Air/Fuel ratio of 26:1 !! Particulary unlikely since you have unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust.

It was done at the local MOT station on Saturday, I thought their stuff would be ok?!?!

air leak in exhaust?

Just realised that is lean, not rich. Probally is an air leak.

That looks like an air leak on the exhaust to me.
If the cat was working you'd expect to see zero CO. So it could be the cat is not big enough to work (bike cats aren't big enough to meet car limits) or not hot enough to work. If thats the case 0.06CO is very weak, possibly in addition to an air leak.

Wrapping the headers might help get it hot. You might have to rev the c**k of it for ages to get it to start working. If it is a bike cat you might have to fit a bigger one.
If you find a leak seal it with clear silicone (don't worry, it'll stand the heat).
