I have my first MOT for the MK due in the next couple of weeks.
After a track incident I noticed that one of the steering arms (the drumstick bit) has a slight bend in it. Whilst the tracking is fine (after being
adjusted) can someone please tell me if this is an automatic MOT failure.
If it is I will bite the bullet and look to get it replaced before the MOT, but if not, it is one less thing that I have to buy at the moment.
cheers
Craig
do you mean this bit?
track rod end.
as far as i know if they notice is it bent it should just be a advisory. But they may fail it if it looks unsafe.
Jossey, it is not the track rod end, it is the drumstick - the bit that the extensions screw onto.
ohhhhh ermmm i dunno then :O) sorry.
i was at the mot station when you asked and i assumed the drumstick was the rackrod end lol
looks a little like a drum stick to me.
ps lovely car :O)
Up to the tester but for me it is a fail on general condition of steering.
Engineering rational is it is slender strut loaded in compression --- if a sturt has even a slight bend in it will buckle at a much lower load than
a straight member, but not many testers have that much knowledge of engineering theory.
My friend drove his car like that - snapped soon after. It is just waiting to fail.

It's a track rod (hence the bit on the end of it being a track rod end) but also commonly known as a rack end.
It's a bit down to the testers opinion but I'd expect a fail. I'd also expect it to bend again at the worst possible moment! Just
change it.

thanks for teh feedback folks, much appreciated.
You do know ofcourse, what the next question is. Do you know if all the sierra tracks rods are interchangable. Given the very kit nature of the car,
how can I tell what kind of steering rack I have, for reference?
Cheers

euro car parts sell sierra track rod ends. there only £7 most of them fit with standard thread.
Cheers Jossey, I have plenty of track rod ends, its the track rods that I was enquiring about.
