Doug (West Garage) very kindly sent me an e-copy of the previous MSVA manual (2003)... I understand that changes are minimal in the 2009 one, but I guess I'd better get myself up to date!

Before I throw £30 at the Govt for a copy, I should really ask if anyone on here has an e-copy of the most recent manual that they could share with me (happy to split the original cost with you!).

Its available for free as a PDF document. Do a search for IVA manual and I bet you will get a bucket load of links.

Yep... plenty of IVA docs, but can't find any MSVA ones.

I have the MSVA manual for bikes trikes etc

I spoke with my local office and only updates were a section regarding headlights and overall width, this is for bike engine trikes.

but I think that it only applies to the sort I build ie, 2 at the back, 1 up front.

got mine here, 2003 edition, last update I had was regarding lighting, and that was 2007

think theres an update about weights but I dont have that

Cheers Tony - it's the 2003 one I have too... any chance you could let me know roughly what the amendments stated? No worries if it's a hassle - I'll just buy the guide.

What I've seen so far is waaaay more straightforward than IVA! No finicky things like sized and lockable petrol caps, or dash projections, etc!

what type of trike are you building?

I think that the tester faxed me the update, if so it wil be saved on my work PC in winfax, will have a look and try to print to .pdf if I have it

the amendment was with regards to bike based trikes, changing the width to 1700mm before 2 headlights are required

It's a reverse-trike I'm building (2-wheels at the front).

I think the old MSVA also had 1700mm as the max for a single main / dip...

? maybe, but mines dated 2003 and it said 1300mm

not that it really matters for you as you will be running 2 at the front anyway

MSVA really is a walk in the park compared to the IVA? or whatever it is that the car guys have to go through.

emissions, LOL whats that 4.5% at worst if you got a newer than 1993 engine.

its just a sort of "more official" MOT

ironic thing is that you can pass it with bald tyres and knackered bearings, just so long as the bearings are in the right location and the tyres are of the correct standard

latest I have heard is that no MOT required for registration, MSVA test, then Q plate, is classed as new vehicle so no MOT for 3 years, helps recoup the £105 cost
