Dreaded Engine Number
rallyingden - 3/8/10 at 06:33 PM

I started a thread a while ago about difficulty in reading the engine number on my Pinto.
IVA approaching and still not sure what it is.
I can make out the following format.... L nnnn where L = a letter and n= a number

Obviously you cant tell me your engine number but what is the format. I'm sure there should be two letters but how many numbers? I can see four.

Would any of you pinto owners be so kind as to have a look at theirs and let me know eg LL nnnnn

Many Thanks
RD

The engine number is always the last 7 of the VIN of the donor if that helps.

Should be - LLnnnnn
and it should be the last 2 letters from the donor chassis number followed by the 5 numbers from the donor car chassis/vin plate.

It is possible for these to be come corroded so a light rubbing over with a flat piece of fine wet&dry ussually makes things clearer.

Engine number is stated on the V5 of the donor
Fords use AA21111 two letters to denote engine manufacture date then any old numbers

2 letters followed by 5 numerals. Just checked my V5 and found that the engine number is wrong! Shows V not U as 1st letter.

powerful magnifier can often make difficult number readable, I have a 10x which has helped me many times

^^^^^^
Just tried with 2 x magnifying glass and made out LL nnnnn.

There again I used to see all kinds of faces and things in the clouds

Convinced wife what the number was so lets hope I can convince the IVA tester the same

Try rubbing white chalk on, worked on mine

Canada EH! - 3/8/10 at 10:02 PM

If the white chalk doesn't work, use an old forensic trick, a small brush and some baking flour should bring it up. make sure the block is clean and dry.
One of our guys used this to identify blocks from burned out cars.
