Harness mounts
ady8077 - 7/6/04 at 06:37 PM

Hi all

The top harness mounts on my roll bar are M10 nuts welded to the cross brace, from what i've found searching this forum this will be an SVA fail ?
If i get tubes welded through the roll bar do they have to be threaded or can i use long bolts and nylocks ?

Not sure about the tubes welded through, but seat belt/harness fasteners are 7/16" UNF (just over 11mm diameter) grade 8.8 or better.

Hi Wicket

Just tried a M10 bolt and it doesn't fit so maybe they are 7/16" UNF ?

Anyone no a supplier of such bolts in 8.8 ?

Thanks Adrian

Adrian,

I have a feeling your M10s will fail SVA anyway as they're too small. Need to be 7/16, 11mm or larger.

... IIRC! ...

The M10's will fail, it's a bit bizzare really - the human body would be sliced into 4 pieces by the harness before an 8.8 M10 would fail

Hi,
I've just had some harness top mounts made up by a fellow Locostbuilder using 20mm outside diameter round bar drilled on a lathe and threaded. He threaded them 7/16UNF for me which is certainly a more elegant solution than the nyloc method and will suit most harness kits. I did consider using an M12 bolt and nyloc with an unthreaded tube but I must say I think I did the right thing. I got my mounts made 60mm long to give me about 5mm above and below the rollbar to make welding easy. I'd recommend you get a 20mm holesaw and arbour from Screwfix to cut the holes in the rollbar for the mounts

I agree that M10 will not be good enough for SVA even though as Mark says, it is more than strong enough!

Drop a U2U to "type907" (Paul) who I'm sure will be happy to make you up some mounts. I've dealt with him a couple of times now and can recommend his work.

Cheers,
Craig.

You normally get bolts supplied with your harness kit but try Namrick if not. I think the web address is just www.namrick.co.uk

Cheers,
Craig.

Hi

Harness's came without bolts, ordered some from www.namrick.co.uk
Thanks
Adrian

8.8 is only applicable to metric bolts, 3 raised notches show an UNF bolt has the right tensile strength

My harnesses came with the bolts and mounting plates... but i did find some seat belt (from production car) bolts in a draw... same thread. Might be worth a look, thousands in breakers

Hi Ben

I tried a bolt out of my works escort van, but it didn't fit

But i've ordered some now so should be ok

Anyone got any comments on the nuts welded to the roll bar ?

Adrian
