IVA Process
rallyingden - 4/2/11 at 10:56 AM

I thought it would be interesting / fun ( maybe not ) to follow my IVA application on here.
I will update it everytime an event, phone call, letter Etc. happens.
Lets see just how long it takes and what issues if any crop up as I go.

Start

Wednesday 2nd Feb AM
IVA form, Amateur build declaration, copy of build diary, letters from Ford & Vosa & some major receipts all sent off 2nd class ( 97p ) Asked for Chadderton ( Manchester )

Thursday 3rd Feb PM
Phone call off VOSA to take payment via debit card..... £450 lighter. Bit of a miserable sod on the phone, just very matter of fact and little interaction.
I asked whats the next step.
"We will process your application send off to Chadderton and they will contact you "

I've cut my nails so I can't bite them

This is gonna be intresting....

I hope to be going down this route myself within the not too distant future....

Humbug - 4/2/11 at 11:23 AM

That's obviously a private road with no public access, since the car's on the road

Good luck with it all... seems like a long time since I went through the SVA/DVLA hoops. I hope it works out as smooth as it was for me.

Cheers

Simon

Vert trusting sending all your docs off 2nd class too!

Bumble - 4/2/11 at 11:30 AM

I will follow this with interest as I'm not far off the exact same position.

Rallyingden........Can you tell me who / where you wrote to at Ford re: Engine age?

Thanks & Good Luck,
Matt

stevegough - 4/2/11 at 12:33 PM

I've recently been there but no t-shirt (just a scrap of paper to show for it).

You are already comparatively way ahead......

POSTED mon 15th nov ( call it DAY 1).
RANG ME wed 24th ( DAY 10 ).
CHADDERTON RANG ME mon 29th ( DAY 15 ).
TEST on 2nd dec ( DAY 18 ).

Best of luck, RD.

A word of warning regarding Chadderton: David is the main guy there - he did my IVA test - which I failed - when he typed up the paperwork - he'd spelt Luego wrong (its also in the VIN). I didn't notice.

When I went for the retest, one of the others (Gary) did it and when he wrote out the IAC (not called a MAC anymore) he copied out David's spelling mistake. He also got the engine number wrong. All sorted now, but CHECK yours before you leave! See thread..http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/29/viewthread.php?tid=149668

Ok Peeps.

Address to write to for Ford confirmation of engine year.

Ford Technical Information Centre
PO Box 300
Walsall

WSS 4QH

My reply went onlong the lines

Dear Mr Pendleton

Thank you for you letter dated Aug 11 requesting age of a Ford Engine you are installing in a kit car
From the information you have supplied, we can confirm the Ford engine bearing the stamped serial number prefix "RMxxxxx was installed into a ford vehicle manufactured during the month of November 1975

Etc Etc

It only took 5 days for them to reply ............ well happy. Just wish engine had been a few month older to qualify for just a smoke test.

Hope this helps

Stevegough, what did yours fail on ? Do they have any pet hates at Chad ?

RD

Daddylonglegs - 4/2/11 at 03:42 PM

Cheers young man

Bumble - 4/2/11 at 04:44 PM

Many thanks.

stevegough - 4/2/11 at 04:46 PM

My Iva fail list can be found here: fail 2nd Dec

And what I did to rectify these faults are detailed here: IVA pass

I don't know if they have any particular hates, but I will say David was a pretty straight guy - pretty helpful and explained things very well.

rallyingden - 5/2/11 at 10:16 AM

Letter from VOSA arrived this morning ..........

Just a recipt for my £450 debit card payment........... and breath out

RD

stevegough - 5/2/11 at 10:38 AM

Sorry! RD, put the wrong link up before.....

What I did to rectify those faults are detailed here....instead

Your responses from VOSA are far too fast! Its just not on!

Thurbs - 6/2/11 at 05:39 PM

Must have got the same goverment bod phoneing me for payment, he was most put out when I said I didn't have my credit card to hand !! at the time I was up to my arm pits in sh1t at work, how dare I !!!
This is the only part of the whole process of building a car I've been dreading.
Now just have to wait for my date and keep ticking off the jobs.

rallyingden - 14/2/11 at 10:28 AM

Just had a call off a very nice lady at Chadderton..............

" You were due for your IVA this morning but we have just realised that we forgot to send you a letter "

Anyway sorted a date out over the phone of the 24th Feb, a week on Thursday at 8am

Must get that sticking throttle cable sorted .....

RD

stevegough - 14/2/11 at 02:42 PM

oops! That's a good 'un! - but best of luck for the 24th!

rallyingden - 24/2/11 at 05:26 AM

Well here we go then ........

Up at 5am just had bacon butty car on trailer, in garage ready to hook up and go.

Last minute panic last night and changed steering wheel for safe option of the original Vaux Corsa one.

Right going to get my lad up who stayed last night to come with me

More later

They won't allow your lad to be with you - he will either have to sit in the waiting room (coffee machine + TV) - remember the test takes a full 4 hours - tell him to take a book! or he can stand behind the rail at the side of the IVA lane.

Lastly - remember what I said about the guy making mistakes on the IAC certificate - check it when you get it!

Best wishes, RD and enjoy it! - I did!!

franky - 24/2/11 at 09:04 AM

Good luck.

rallyingden - 24/2/11 at 02:01 PM

Not a really bad list but quite a few things

1) Emmissions ...... too rich
2) Noise ..... Could not maintan correct revs without missfire , probably due to 1)
3) Could not carryout brake test as sump fouled on rollers..... Need to raise suspension or shorten sump. But he did say he took it out in car park and fronts locked before rears, we were also able to check handbrake, that was OK so I think brakes will be fine, they are all brand new anyway inc master cyl.
4) Radius on wing stays
5) Need to protect front shock adjusting nuts
6) Wants to see some ford type covers on upper seat belt mounts.
7) Need doc evidence that fuel pipe used is OK
8) The "Smiths" clocks I have used have too sharp a radius
9) Bolt on hadbrake lever fouling ( just.... )

All in all not too bad an expierience so I'm off to the garage.........

Anyone got any ideas what to do with the dash dials, some king of ring round the outer ?

Cheers

RD

matt_gsxr - 24/2/11 at 02:16 PM

I took a foam rubber camping mat, cut holes the same size as the gauges in it, covered it in plastic car seat stuff with contact adhesive.

It fitted as a friction fit over the 3 gauges that are outside the steering wheel area. It looked quite meant, but I thrrew it out after the test.

I have seen similar on other cars.

Thats not too bad at all, fairly simple fixes.

Any chance of some pictures of the fail points (Those that can be photo'd)?

rallyingden - 24/2/11 at 02:41 PM

Will take some pick later and post them

Cheers
RD

adithorp - 24/2/11 at 04:17 PM

The left hand edge of my clocks fell outside the exempt area. I made a hood over them from a piece of ally with edge rubber on it. that stopped the head form ball getting to them.It was intended to be temporary but has stayed ever since as it makes the clocks easier to read in sun light and obscures the speedo from the passenger.

Stick some new plugs in for the retest once you've sorted the richness. They tend to get a bit oiled up from that and lots of workshop start ups and that won't be helping the missfire during the noise test.

Overall not a bad fail.

stevegough - 24/2/11 at 08:48 PM

Ok, RD - what a relief now, isn't it! you aren't scratching you head anymore because you know what you have to do to get it on the road! I had 11 fail points, so you did better than I did (and you had better weather!).

Your sump must be very low to the ground - mine's 2.75 inches and it was close dropping into the rolling road, but you could still see daylight under it. You need to see if anyone's got a pinto shortened sump or do your own (I managed to get a friend who's a good welder to do the weld on my steel one after I'd cut it). But 2.75 inches is AFTER shortening it! Looking at the current appaling state of the roads, I wouldn't want it any lower.

I had rubber 'U' edging glued around my upper harness plates - he was happy with them.
I thought the front coilover adjuster is in the new 'exempted' area bounded by the wishbones? (manual page 135) Mine weren't covered? Having said that, you can hardly argue with him....probably not a good idea?

Anyway - as I said with mine - a 'Good fail' well done! You'll soon be sorted, Steve.

rallyingden - 21/3/11 at 12:31 PM

Got some of the minor, sharp edge fails done then decided it needed a rolling road session to sort out emmissions and missfire. I took it to a guy called Darren Bingley at Morcambe, he buids and races formula 2 stock cars running pinto's and his engine guy, Alan knows the ancient art of setting up twin 40's.

I took it the Friday after my fail and he had it two weeks ! but hey. He had to rebuild one set of 40's as the pump mechanism was not working properly, he changed pump jets, new Thakary washers, put a far better linkage on the carbs, balanced & tweeked. CO now down to 2.6.
Picked it up on Friday and as I had a bit of spare time I called in to Chadderton VOSA testing station and booked my retest there and then, all set for this Friday (25th).
Got the car back in the garage over the week end and finished the list of jobs from the fail sheet, namely the sump, it failed on not being able to do brake test coz it bottomed out when it sat on the rollers, also fitted the seat belt anchorage covers and fuel pipe connectors.

So its all ready for Friday and I have just rung Adrian Flux regading insurance £190 fully comp 3000 miles wife to drive too and insured on chassis number till I get it through the DVLA. I am going to see them ( DVLA ) at Preston this week and see if I can call in with the car on Friday after hopefully passing the IVA retest.

So far so good ........ keep watching

RD

stevegough - 21/3/11 at 12:45 PM

Sounds like you are nearly there, RD - it'll be worth it in the end.

As far as DVLA, Preston is concerned - be prepared - it is a busy place and parking is difficult (ASDA carpark is a good stand-by). Read my thread regarding my registration - It was very straightforward, but I don't think they'll do it 'there and then'.

DVLA thread

Best of luck on Friday, don't forget to double - check every bit on the IAC cert they give you!

rallyingden - 21/3/11 at 04:14 PM

Thanks Steve I will check everything
Going to visit Preston DVLA before Friday and see if I can arrange to call in on way home from IVA.

Cheers
Dennis

The Black Flash - 22/3/11 at 04:41 PM

Good luck - they took over a month to register a guy's dax last year

rallyingden - 25/3/11 at 05:30 PM

^^^^^ Thanks Andy but if you look out your window you will see my number plates on the car

Passed retest ....... with problems, see my other post. Called at Preston DVLA and got registered and my tax disc there and then, still got some charm left just not quite enough to blag an age related plate so Q it is.

Now what do I build next
