Hi all,

I tried stamping my VIN no. on to a chassis rail at the weekend only for the stamps to bounce off and not look pretty. I then stumbled across the following thread on here.

A couple of questions:

Is there a minimum charachter size for the VIN lettering?

If as per the link you have stamped some thin plate and welded to chassis what material / thickness have you used?

Is there anybody that will supply stamped plates?

I just cut the side off a spare piece of 25mm square and stamped that, then welded it to the chassis. I also used a dremel (badly!) to engrave it into the aluminium floor.

i went to my local trophy engraver and he did me a plate for about £5 if i remember right

My Striker chassis has a Vin engraved in to it.

10. There must not be any gaps large enough to insert extra characters between the characters for the VIN shown on the manufacturer’s plate or stamped into the vehicle.

Other than in the case of a Mass Produced vehicle the characters on the manufacturer’s plate must be at least 3.5mm high.
12.
The characters used for the VIN stamped into the chassis, frame or other similar structure must be at least 3.5mm high.

Easiest to stamp a piece of steel against something solid (vice/anvil) and then weld that to the chassis. Stamping the chassis tubes direct risks denting the tube.

I ended up just stamping a piece of 1mm steel plate, cut it out and welded it to the top chassis, passed through IVA no problem.

Get the local engravers to print you out a plate.

You can include everything, VIN, post code, & more, very cheap.

I engraved mine with a Dremel (using a pointy diamond burr) and painted over with silver Hammerite. Worked nicely and SVA were happy.

Not tried it out yet but we have just installed a little CNC micro mill which seems ideal for this sort of work, done them on ali before for various kit cars and rebuilds but this thing is designed to work with steel, could have a go at it sometime if it isn't urgent

Stamped mines on a piece of 3mm thick and then tig -ed it on to the chassis rail. IIRC you need an asterix at the start and beginning of the vin no ( Use the I in 3 postions)
