Need to go to dvla today to register car after iva but footman James have sent me a covernote and not a certificate. Will this be ok to get paperwork for registration??

No... I think you need the certificate. Can you get them to fax/email you a copy?

I rang them and they said they always send out a covernote and they've never had a problem?

I'm sure it said on the paperwork that dvla wanted a certificate.

A cover note is a insurance certificate for a short period, usually 7 to 30 days. It is a legal binding document and can be used to satisfy the DVLA requirement on insurance. I have used them on numerous occasions to tax my vehicles, etc.

But for the DVLA registration? To get a tax disc, fair enough, but this is (supposedly) a very official step in the process of getting a car on the road.


What will it cost you to try Stu? If the DVLA take it, then happy days, if not, you point out that it was not stipulated in your paperwork that a cover note would not suffice, and refuse to pay the inspection fee...

I don't even know if they are going to want to inspect it.

I think mine was on a cover note untill I got the registration number, then the proper cert' issued.

You might get lucky and the DVLA office follow the new instructions that inspection is no longer needed... or you might not. You might walk out with a reg' or it might take a week or even a month. Whatever happens stay cooland be nice. If you're not then your application might get "lost".

Yes, you can only get a 'cover note' until registered as a certificate would specify 'Registration Mark' (number plate) and the DVLA have not issued one yet. That is why you are going to see them so that you can get one. As soon as the DVLA issue a reg number then you will be able to get a 12 month certificate of insurance issued.



DVLA does NOT equal simple. Simples.........

your cover note will suffice you then receive a registration mark which in turn you advise your insurance company. If you drive the vehicle there you would need to phone them up immediately after getting the registartion mark (otherwise you may not be insured)> The DVLA came out to my property to inspect then sent me details in the post. I am aware that some allow you to visit them

They took all my paperwork but wouldn't give me the reg certificate so gotta wait for it in the post.

Good news is that's all done so all I gotta do now is wait for the postman

I bet if it hadnt been Friday afternoon I would be registered but nevermind.
