I've got a couple of questions regarding MOT:
Firstly, do you need one? There seems to be disagreement over whether this is actually required or whether the 3 year rule applies as on production
cars.
Secondly, how do you get to the test? Are you allowed to drive there with no SVA, number plate etc?
Cheers

Not sure about whether you actually need an MOT, but I found a couple of minor niggly faults at my MOT before I went to the SVA and it gave me a bit
of confidence to drive the 160 mile round trip to the SVA!
On the legal side, You need to be insured - not all policies cover to and from the MOT before the car is SVA tested. You need an appointment, and the
car should display identifing numbers front and rear (chassis number) and it is probably a good idea to put a notice on the back to inform the local
plod that you are on the way to/from an MOT.
Hope this helps

Thanks Mookaloid. When you say I need to display identifying numbers front and rear what exactly do you mean? Are you saying I need numberplates front
and rear that are printed with my chassis number? (17 characters)
Cheers

Pete,
you don't need an MOT before SVA but its best to check with your local DVLA as they may require one in order to register your vehicle. There is a
lot of inconsistency from area to area.
You don't really need numberplates front and rear showing your chassis number to drive to MOT, as long as you are insured to do so.
I was advised by Gosforth SVA testing centre that It is breaking the law not to display this 'identifying number' on the car i.e. chassis
number as I didn't have a reg number.
All I did was write it on some card with a felt tip pen and tape it on the roll over bar with masking tape.
Whether they were right or not I don't know, but it's no real effort so I did it
On the Insurance front, just to be clear, 3 out of the 4 companies I contacted said I would be insured to drive to and from the SVA test, but NOT to
an MOT beforehand!
I would not have known this if I had not asked the question because they didn't volunteer it........
