Reason for keeping Sierra wheel?
scoobyis2cool - 15/8/04 at 10:42 AM

I know a lot of people keep their sierra steering wheel for SVA, then swap it over afterwards. I was just wondering why this is? Something to do with radii?

Has anyone passed SVA with a smaller wheel fitted? At the moment I've got a Mountney wheel fitted so would rather go to SVA with that, but if it's a definite fail point I guess it will have to come off again!

sva specifies that the wheel must be padded, with a padded boss, and must not have any holes or apertures that could catch fingers or jewlelry. It must also be approved for sva.

a lot of aftermarket wheels dont come close.

so, the easiest thing is to use the std wheel and change it afterwards

Aaaah, Ok that makes sense. The wheel itself is padded but the boss is made of rock hard smash-yer-face-in plastic, so I guess that might be a fail!

I passed with my mountney wheel, with centre horn push. I did have the padded removeable bit though.

Hmm so it can be done, have you got any photos? How did you make it look "permanent" enough to please the examiner?

I think it still might be easier to use the sierra wheel and change it later rather than making up some padding that I won't ever use!

Hi Pete

I bought a center pad for mountney wheels from Europa, passed sva no probs

Anyone know if there is a smaller feista or something wheel that will drop straight on cheaply for the test, then worry about a "nice " one later?

Adrian, do you know if you need a collapsible boss??

Regards, Ian.

Hi Ian

I was advised to fit a collapsable boss so i did, the examiner never commented on it so i assume he liked what he saw ?

My mountney boss was collapsible and the pad came with it and just clips on.

There's another benefit to a bigger wheel- the SVA exempt area around the wheel!

Stuff can stick out of the dash if it's within a (170?mm) radius of the steering wheel. Obviously the bigger the wheel the more area of dash is covered!

Does the SVA test require you to be able to clearly see all the switches etc behind the wheel without moving your head? If I fit my bigger sierra wheel it may obscure the fog lamp switch
