Decyphering kit car vin numbers.
DANMAN - 12/3/12 at 08:42 AM

Hi guys.

Just wondering how the VIN/Chassis number thing works with kit cars in the UK. Is there a decyphering tool or chart explaining it? Most standard vehicles are fitted with a 17 digit VIN plate which has certain coding for year of manufacture and country of origin. What about kit cars?

Dan.

Most people just make one up.

Sweeet!
So there is no particular significance in the Chassis numbers?

I am looking at purchasing a Stuart Taylor Locost that only has a 5 digit chassis number. Is this the norm for ICV's in the UK or is it a massive issue?

You shouldn't have much difficulty decyphering the one I made up

Wait so you can make your own? Can you put your name in it like PETES1ST? :p

My old Mac1 had a quality chassis number. it was something like:

MAC1WORXGSXR1000K4

Just make one up. As long an noby else has nevver registered it.

When I was NZ I noticed that people just made up their number plates. I wish we could do that. Any letter, any number, any spacing!

That level of awesomeness almost makes up for having to pay £450 to get it iva'd!

I think that will have to become my new home page!

Just remember there are a few conventions eg no O (Oscar) or I (India) allowed. as they are counted as figures. ie 0-9.
ie Luego Viento will be seen as.... lueg(ZERO) V(ONE)ent(ZERO)
Watch this, when you go to get an MoT! It even had the MoT man going for a while! This was before its was registered. I was having it MoT'd as a sanity check before the drive to the SVA. Which turned out NOT to be a good Idea as I then had to Mot it for the first 3 years. Still a MoT every year is a good safety check if nothing else.

DVLA can issue one. Your Kit Car Manufacturer can issue with one, or you can make your own up. But it does need to fit in with the conventions.

NO major problem making your own. SOME people in the DVLA will argue and might try to stop you. Just be sure of your facts and that it does meet the conventions.
I think they have to be at least 17 characters. eg itsmykitcar000001

Not trying to be snoopy but i typed both those vin numbers into a free online vin checker and it says they are invalid?

I cant believe you came across a free one. Have you got a link to it?

They might be US ones tho

I just wrote to my local DVLA asking if the 17 digit number I had made up would be ok and got no, They had to issue me with one. Stamped it in two days ago. Pi**t off if you can still make up your own but I’m not going to change it now.

So I've been seeing examples where people have not been allowed to make up their own, I'd probably just phone them up, say I already have a VIN and could they send a V55/5, then just put my made up one on there and send it back, they can't really say no after you've paid £55 can they? From what I've heard they are doing the absolute minimum effort to get this done, would they bother sending a letter back saying it is wrong?

Macbeast - 14/3/12 at 10:01 AM

I tweaked mine slightly on my post because I thought some snoopy person would look it up

vanepico - 14/3/12 at 11:44 AM

I only wanted to know if they worked, after seeing on adverts you have to pay bloody £3 for the service! Can you tell me if it works?
