I need to verify the age of my engine for IVA emmisions test and dont have any documentary evidence. I took the engine number to a local garage, and
they said that they were not able to enter engine number into the autodata, so could not help. Is this a case that they dont know how to use the full
capability of autodata or is it just not possible?
The engine number is:
20NE 25298165
My understanding (at least from a Haynes manual that I have) is that the engine would have been found on a Vauxhall Cavalier from October 1988 to 1995
(F to N Reg Petrol). I think it is it doesnt have a 'C' in the code.
The engine is 2.0L (1998cc)
Has anyone got access to Auto Data that could help me out? I am happy to pay.
I know that this has been discussed a number of times before but hope that someone can help!
Thanks in advance.
Matt
Autodata isn't specific to engine number (or chassis no). It goes by year, make, model, engine size, engine CODE. In your case it'd g as far
as 20NE.
So it wouldn't count as proof of engine manufacture date as the same engine code covers several years.
Hmmm. I thought I had read on previous post that autodata print out was accepted by IVA tester? If thats not the case, then Mr Jon Bell at Vauxhall is
my only hope? Right?

Just checked and you can't see engine numbers. By checking various years you can compare engine codes and that shows the 20NE was only fitted from 88-93 (C20NE was 88-95) but you'd have to check with VOSA to know if they'll accept that as proof. I doubt it though as the format isn't conclusive.
is there not a date code on the block somewhere ?
see this old thread:

This is great - thanks everyone. I will take a close look at the engine tonight to see if the numbers are there. I will then call VOSA to see what
they say.
I am based near Towcester / Northampton. Can anyone recomend a good, friendly test station that I should try to test the vehicle at, or do I not get a
choice? Happy to travel to a well regarded test center.
If anyone can recomend, then I will give that test station a call to get their thoughts on engine age.
Thanks again
Matt
