Do you need insurance to apply for the IVA? I will be trailering the car to the test.

I know I need it for the registration to get my RFL but not sure about the IVA test.

No you don't need insurance to take you car to the IVA, assuming you are trailering it

But make sure you are covered for trailing a car!

Trailers are not covered by car insurance anyway (other than 3rd party)?
