Calling Vauxhall Experts! Block markings.
mcg - 17/5/12 at 12:19 PM

Following a previous thread, I have found some numbers on the block of my 8v 2.0 20NE Vauxhall engine, just by the engine mounts:

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/29/viewthread.php?tid=170241

It looks like the numer says:

22_89
or
27_89

I am hoping the 89 means 1989, but the previous number seems slightly strange. Can anyone shed any light?

If this is legitimately a date stamp, then I will be contacting the IVA test station direct to check that this is admisable as proof, but I am just trying to gather info.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

where is this marking? if its down below the engine mounting point on the exhaust side, then it could well be.
though i'd have thought it would say 02 02 89 or 02 07 89

The marking is on the exhaust side, below to the right of the mounting point.
Thats what confused me - I was expecting a 6 digit number.

ah cool, coz i found this months ago

which shows the date stamped on in a slightly different place (but very similar) and a different format, so i reckon it could be 2/2/89 or 2/7/89? slightly different location, slightly different date format? as far as i know, thats where all the dates go. almost all these engines from vauxhall are the same or very similar blocks, which is nice

cool - well hopefully that will be enough for Mr IVA man, but I will call em to discuss. I may need to get Mr Bell at GM to officially date the engine, but I'd prefer not to spend the 110quid, plus there is no guarantees. It would be nice if the IVA inspector would be happy with the date stamped on the block but having read other peoples experiences, there are no guarantees. Will have to wait and see!

Thanks for your help.

Matt

yeah, i'd heard about people writing off to vauxhall and getting charged, so i'm a bit confused as to why that wouldn't be acceptable. my worry is that my engine mounts, bought from SHP, cover the date up... so i can't show it at IVA lol i'll have to work something out. let me know how you get on with the IVA centre please!

It's probably week 27 in the year 1989.

Hopefully they will accept it
Because if they want a letter from Vauxhall instead it won't be cheap
They used to charge £50 and that was a few years ago

great stuff - thanks everyone.

Week number then year makes sense to me! I have emailed VOSA technical dept to see what the say.

Cost of getting the letter from Vauxhall is now £100, plus they dont guarantee to find anything!

Thanks again

What dates are on your camshaft bearing caps?

On my red top I had the date on the block as in the pictures and the camshaft bearing caps were also dated

Dont know. I will have a look tonight. I am not actually sure where I would find the camshaft bearing caps? Will I need to take the rocker cover off to see them?

I could see mine through the oil cap, no need to remove the rocker cover

When I built my red top engine I sent Vauxhall an email, and I got a phone call a few days later by an excited chap as he'd never been asked to do any thing like this and he liked the challenge, after having a good chat to him he told me over the phone wot year the engine was and then asked me if I wanted written conformation at a cost of £0, all they needed was the engine number
