What have you used to put your VIN on with?

Punch onto a steel plate, then weld it on the chassis. That way you don't deform the chassis. Also do an alloy plate and rivet that on in a different place too.

I did a similar thing with a dremel and it worked nicely and passed VOSA and DVLA with no comments.

Make sure you go deep enough (i.e. past the powerdercoat and into the metal).

Same as Ben said, I took a strip of 3mm to my local garage and they let me do the numbering and even signed the form to say it had been put on the car (In case your not aware, the form is needed to confirm that the VIN is actually present on the car and needs to be signed/stamped by a garage and is used for registration).
