About 5 months ago I purchased the running gear from someone who was stripping their MX5. Part of the deal was that I would get the V5 so that I could
use the reg number on my roadster when completed. I filled in the new owner section of the V5 and left with the seller and retained my part.
He planned to scrap the bodywork so I cut out the vin plate from the shell and also took this home with me.
The new V5 has never made it to me and now that I am starting to look at the engine etc I want to make sure I will be able to transfer the plate when
complete. How do I do this. Do I need to chase the DVLA now to sort out the change of ownership, get my new V5 then declare the car sorn untill my
build is completed?
Or shall I just keep hold of the section of old V5 that I kept untill nearer the time and then transfer saving me the hassle of declaring it sorn each
year
If you don't SORN it you will get a hefty fine, you need to apply to the DVLA for a V5 ASAP.
So does that mean that when they issue the new V5 I just register as sorn. Then what do I do when I want tore register on my roadster?
Do you want the acctual plate? or just to use that MX5 as your donor and gain an age related plate based on that reg?
If the former then you will struggle to transfer the plate to the kit as the source car needs to be MoTd (or sorned for no more than a year IIRC). IF
the latter then, yes just apply for the v5 and sorn it once the new v5 arrives.
Hi
You wont get that reg No or vin No
The V5 tells dvla what the donor is & what year
if you are going for age related plate.
If you absolutely want to keep that specific No
I would imagine you will have to put the No
on a retaining certificate which includes the transfer fee
£80 last time I did it, then they can register it with that no.
we did it , had a private plate on a retainer & they allocated it
to our car as the 1st Reg,
But before any of this you must get the V5 from the donor,& sorn it. (Chase them)
Good luck.

Sorry for the confusion it's an age related plate not the actual plate.
So if I chase and get the V5 through then declare it sorn they will issue me with an age related plate when certified?
How do you then dispose ofthe V5 when the build is finished? Is there any problem with holding a V5 for just an engine gearbox and diff?
I believe you hand over the old V5 for the donor parts when registering to get an age related plate and the DVLA will remove the donors details from their system, or thats how its supposed to work.

Is there any reason why the DVLA would not send me the V5 given that I have the new owner slip. It has been some time since the putchase

cos the old owner didnt send his part of the V5 to the DVLA.
there is a form to fill in to sort this.
you need that stub / ticket to send to the dvla with the form.
I strongly suggest you take a photo copy before sending as its your ONLY evidence.

If the 2nd has happened how do I go about things as technically he would have scrapped my car?

How does one find out if a car is still registered with the DVLA?
Also as I have the proof of new ownership slip from the V5 when registering would they take this into account and issue me an age related plate?
Type the reg and make into this url after selecting vehicle enquiry tab. If its shows up then apply for the V5 quickly and SORN it.
Hope that helps

It shows up so I will get the ownership slip off to them tomorrow. When I get the V5 do I just register sorn until I take it in as my new car? Then do the dvla deal with unregistering the old car and issuing a new age related plate?
It is possible to get a car 'unscrapped'. Or at least it was possible a few years back. My dad bought a car for parts off a friend who assumed my dad would strip it so sent off the V5 and letter to DVLA to say it had been scrapped, my dad simply applied for the v5 with a covering letter explaining the mistake and they reissued the v5 in his name.
Just got the V5 through - Happy Days.
Good news. Going back to your original post, once a car is SORNed, it stays that way until it is taxed or scrapped. You don't have to (any more) re SORN it every year.
