taxing sorned car
Mikef - 28/3/13 at 11:56 AM

Not sure about this one, any thoughts out there.

My Westfield is Sorned at the moment. I normally tax it for 6 months from 1st April. This year that is a bank holiday, because it is sorned the Post office wont sell me a tax disc until the 1st of the month, and they are not open on this day. I could buy it on line but the site says I cant drive it without displaying a current tax disc, which will take 3/5 days to arrive. It does say I can drive it on the road with out displaying for these few days provided that I bought it before my old tax disc ran out . Which it obviously has. So as I see it unless I tax it from 1st March I am stuffed until Tuesday , when the post office is open ?

I know I could tax it from 1st March , but that means I would need to tax it for a year as I have 3 hill climbs in Sept.

From what I can gather, the new ruling allows 14 days grace for displaying the Tax disc if applied online. I think there was a thread on here regarding displaying Tax discs a few days ago. The system will show the car as taxed if done online so the Rozzers wil know if it's legal or not. I guess it depends what sort of a day the officer has had if you get stopped?

HTH

BTW, I am in the same situation so will be watching the thread with interest

Edit: Found the link

Buy it online, it will show on the system as taxed and the chance of a copper A) bothing to look when his 'computer says yes' or B) caring that that its not displated provding the car is insured, mot'd, in good nick and not being driven stupidly.

As above, I've done the same before although with my tintops. Basically, when you buy tax online you receive an e-mail with a confirmation and order number, and registration details - so it all validates. I used to print this out and carry with me until the tax disk officially arrived.

Plus I believe the automated system updates very shortly after confirmed purchase, so any camera's should show the vehicle is taxed.

Only thing i'd watch out for is that if you do it online, make sure it is valid from 1st onwards, else you'll be paying a months amount for the last few days of March!

NB - I've just checked, and the offence you're *potentially* committing is 'failure to DISPLAY a valid tax disk. Having said this, if you've got proof then they have to take the leeway or grace period for delivery into account.

I have just solved the same problem.

I went to tax my car ready for April 1st on Monday and was told that as my car is sorn I can only do it 2 working days before the tax start date.

if it was an already taxed non scorn car you can do it from the 5th of the last remaining month.

went to the post office just now. no problems at all. just showed insurance, most and V5c.

Post office should allow you to tax from next month as today is 28th and there is less than 2 working days.

I done MINE yesterday at the post office! It was on sorn, didn't have any issues quickest I've ever had it done. No forms nothing just a large amount of money to pay out.
