Just wondering if my set up is ok for iva or do I need to change it.
My dipped headlights and main beam can be turned on without the side lights on. Is this ok or should I re-wire it so the side lights must be on for
the others to work?
(Sides can be turned on when ignition is off, dipped and main only come on when ignition is on)
Cheers
Sidelights must be on when headlights are on - IVA requirement I believe
Add a small standard 12 volt relay. Wire its coil (terminals 85 and 86) in parallel with the sidelights. Cut the main live feed wire to your
headlight switch and wire the ends across terminals 30 and 87 of the relay.
This gives the correct function of allowing the headlights to only be operable when the sidelights are on.
The is NO IVA requirement for dipped or mains to be linked to the side lights in anyway.
Headlamps;
1.
All obligatory and optional headlamps must be fitted as “matched pairs”.
2.
They must be operational
3.
They must be fitted in the correct orientation as would be on an approved vehicle.
4.
They must emit a white light.
5.
When on dip or main beam they must emit sufficient light to be able to illuminate the road in front of the vehicle
6.
The correct number must be fitted to the vehicle (Table 1)
7.
Dipped beam headlamps must be positioned to meet the requirements of Table 1
8.
There must be a tell tale when on Main Beam. (see note 1)
I was just think that Loggyboy and also cursing that I may have missed it and was going to have to remove loom covering to correct!
Might not be an IVA requirement but I wouldn't want it set up so you could forget to put sidelights on when you swiched the heads on and be driving around without rear lights.
Hmm OK however I'm pretty sure that my Tester told me that Sidelights should be on with the Headlights on.
But if it's not in the IVA Manual then I stand corrected.
The logic that my Tester used was that if your sidelights are on when a Headlight bulb pops at least on-coming traffic can still 'see' how
wide your vehicle is (because you have a Sidelight in your headlight) and allow for you when overtaking etc.....
I think I'd wire Sidelights on with Headlights for that reason alone
In the UK before about 1930 the side lights used to go out when the head lights were switched on but it was changed for very obvious safety reasons.
