My everyday car is a Smart Fortwo that the VED is just £30 pa.
If a £30 VED vehicle was used as a donor for a special how do DVLA treat it for road tax ? Would it be classed on engine size or the original donor
VED group ?
I have no intention of using my Smart as a donor as this is just a theoretical question

All vehicles without a CO2 figure (including amateur-built IVAd vehicles) get taxed in the 'old' PLG class, i.e. engine size based.
Thanks - that's as I thought. So it'd go up from £30 to £140 pa !

unless you avoid the iva i.e body conversion?
to somthing like:
Not to my liking though! (actually looks really nasty in my view) Hard to believe that was a production car....
Might be a step to far as the roof could be classed as part of the chassis..

That is called a Crossblade. I think horrible too !
The Fortwo convertible has removable roof rails as does the Roadster.
There is a kit car based on the Smart - the Micholak C7
Not to my taste either.

I think this is the ciritical bit (from: www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/forms/~/media/pdf/leaflets/inf26.ashx‎
-------->
To keep the original registration number:
Cars and light vans must use:
the original unaltered chassis or unaltered monocoque
bodyshell (that is, the body and chassis as one unit);
or
n a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same
specification as the original. A receipt from the dealer
or manufacturer is required.
AND the vehicle must have two other major components
– as listed below – from the original vehicle.
n
Suspension (front and back)
Axles (both)
n Transmission
n Steering assembly
n Engine
If a second-hand chassis or monocoque bodyshell is
used, the vehicle must have Individual Vehicle Approval
(IVA) or Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) (see section 11). A
‘Q’ registration number will then be issued (see section 7).

So it might be possible with careful donor choice... BUT I would contact DVLA as the above is the reg number and i am guess this means you keep the
VED of the donor...
