Hypothetical Q
Simon - 28/6/13 at 09:57 PM

If you were to use the floorpan/chassis of a tintop as the basis of a project (eg Beetle chassis for beachbuggy), technically you aren't allowed to alter the basic structure.

Now, if I was to throw away; say the front torsion bar suspension bits and pieces and replace with that of something else, say using an RX8 front end (which contains everything needed), and I modified the subframe to fit the chassis, technically, I haven't altered the basic structure, so would I get away with it

Having done SVA, the IVA holds no fears for me, so would prob put through that as a matter of my own security and satisfaction that anything else.

Thoughts please

Cheers

I'm sure there is a process where you can get the V5 updated without too much effort. There's a whole load of kits out there that are essentially tintop rebodies, they get revised details on the V5. Ferrari rep on a Peugeout 406 springs to mind?

I think aslong as you dont modify the actual chassis, i.e. cutting bits out/shortneing etc, you should be ok. I would say the best option in that case would be to do the body modification and leave the original suspension in place, get the V5 details updated and then change the suspension as Im not sure if they still use that points system for V5 updates where you have to have so many points by keeping original parts.

There's no numbers on the beetles suspension anyway so you can change that to whatever you want, floor pans can be custom too which is a good idea as the standard ones are incredibly flimsy. So long as you don't shorten the chassis you can keep the reg, tbh I would not ever bother informing the DVLA as I went through the whole process and it just came back just as before still registered as the beetle so it was totally pointless exercise which just cost me money
