Donor with no v5

| have been offered all the parts I need from a mk2 Escort to build a book locost , but the donor has no v5...Is it impossible to get an age related plate without it? Thanks

Depends on a number of factors, have you got the original number plate? first thing I would do is check with DVLA as its likely that the docs may already be in use on another vehicle.

If it hasn't been officially scrapped then a new V5 needs a V62 and £25 but you need to know the registration.
If it's been scrapped then no hope, if it's had the numbers put onto another car then it gets complex as you'll be in a fight with the current owner of the plates.

Not that an age related plate is any real advantage over a Q (you won't get to keep historic status for example).

Ok, has the 'historic status' law changed? I know of some older locosts that have historic status from the donor.

Age related plates can be changed to some sort of personalised plate in some cases possible positive effect on resale value?

Pre-SVA the DVLA's rules on registration changes were implemented rather "randomly" by local offices so it depends who did it and how the computer was upated (IIRC the status is done against the first registration date and chassis number).
A few "locosts" are still registered as the donor on the V5 so keep the status until the MOT flags the problem.

However I've just looked on the DVLA's web-site and it's changed completely since I last read it - from a first read you can no longer get age-related plates at all for kit-cars and everything will have to be new reg or a Q.

Whilst the age related plate info has been removed from the site, I emailed them last year and they confirmed it can still be done. I dont know if this has changed since then, or whether the removal of the info off the site is an indicator that I soon will be Q's or new plates only. I cant see thiis happening as it would put a strain in the availablilty of Q plates, there is a very finite amount of Qs available.

Interesting information, was your email before the changed the website?

Ignoring the fact they could introduce a new format Q plate in the new pattern (Qx14 XXX) there are of the order of 10million possible Q plates (23^3*900 ~ 11million and removing a bunch for rude words) Can't imagine running out soon.

Buy a cheap donor car and resgister it for SORN. Drive or tow it to a local scrappy with paperwork and personal ID so they know you are legit. Ask for a deal where they take the car for slightly less than they'd normally pay and dont register it as scrapped.
It will be unusual for them but not unknown and it will save them spending 10 mins writing out a certificate of destruction. Youve aquired a donor registration.
