Removable Steering Wheel
Chris_R - 31/10/04 at 11:03 AM

Has anyone passed their SVA using only a removable steering wheel as their mechanical anti-theft device?

We heard on the grapevine from somewhere that it is not acceptable for SVA.

But you knew that already otherwise you wouldn't have asked

Well, suppose you could still start the engine without the wheel, but I thought they mightn't notice.

Would an immobiliser with a transponder key fob do the trick?

I'm sure I've read or heard somewhere that removable wheels wouldn't pass the SVA - but this may be just an urban myth!

I suggest that you ring the nearest SVA centre and get an opinion. I visited Chelmsford SVA with a set of questions, which they were happy to answer (although I had to wait 30 minutes while he finished what he was doing... reasonable, as I'd turned up unannounced).

Maybe that they're just not an acceptable anti-theft device.

On one of my numerous visits to Nottingham SVA centre a GD Cobra was being tested. It had a removeable wheel and passed without comment. I even queried it with the examiner and he said they were fine.

Mine passed with a removable wheel.

yeah but don't you also have the transponder key thingy for anti theft as well?

TFFT. I'll ring beverly before i do anything but it's reassuring to know that some people have got through!
I still have my standard steering lock though
